Sadly an MMO is also driven by the people you play with. There's a single private server alternative and I'm glad to report that acceptance of private servers in my guild has been increasing. But we're still not quite there yet and it's fucking exhausting. And also Blizzard will probably try to shut that private server down once they announce their direct competitor next year. It's infuriating.

They realized most people just don't care. I'm one of the people enabling ABK in particular by playing Classic WoW and it's annoying as fuck that there's no Fantasy MMO comparable to it, because everybody knows the risks of developing an MMO is too high. The only competitors FFXIV and LOTRO have sticked to what Retail WoW is doing and became too "modernized" (read: macrotransaction-ridden, time-gated casino experiences) for me to enjoy.

True and real. The entertainment industry has collectively decided to become risk management corporations. Innovation is dead, Standards are dead, Principles are dead, Fun and Art is dead. It's all about how to gain the most money with the least amount of risk for short-term investors. With the increased communication speed of the internet came an incredible hit to the value of longevity. Investors had to FAFO in the retail market. Now big-ticket investors are able to bail before shit hits the fan.
